Background Information

On July 10, 1963, the Nation Building Force was officially established following the implementation of the Council of Ministers Resolution.

The session was held on April 19, 1963, under the command of Tanganyika’s Commander-in-Chief and President, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

The recommendation to establish JKT came from the General Meeting of the Youth League of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU Youth League), which was held in the Tabora region in 1958 and was given by the Secretary General of the TANU Youth League at the time, Brother Julius Nyerere, who is now deceased.

The Act That Created JKT

The Nation Building Force exists legally because, when it arrived in 1964, the Parliament enacted the Law for the Establishment of JKT, which gave legal force to the Council of Ministers’ 1963 decision to establish the Army.

Joining JKT was voluntary, according to the law. The law was amended in 1966 to create a procedure for joining JKT in accordance with the law.
